Aberlour sits in the heart of Speyside, and the 12 Year Old is the distillery’s calling card — matured in two cask types at once, traditional oak for backbone and Oloroso sherry butts for richness, then married together before bottling. It is the dram that tends to convince people who thought they did not like Scotch.
The sherry influence is unmistakable: dried fruit, toffee and dark chocolate over baked apple and a warm cinnamon note, finishing soft and long. Drink it neat, or add a few drops of water to open the aromatics. A generous cold-weather whisky that suits a quiet armchair as well as a gift box.
