Waco, Texas is not where anyone expected serious single malt to come from, and Balcones has spent more than a decade proving the point anyway. The Texas climate pushes maturation hard, pulling flavor out of the barrel at a pace Scotland cannot match, and Cataleja is one of the more expressive results to come out of that warehouse.
Rich and full-bodied, with dark fruit, honeyed malt, toasted oak and a warm baking-spice finish. Take it neat first, then add a few drops of water and watch it open. This is a bottle for the whisky drinker who has worked through the Scotch shelf and wants to know what American single malt is capable of.
