Malting is a step usually reserved for barley, and applying it to rye is the whole idea behind this release. Basil Hayden built its reputation on whiskey that leads with elegance rather than power, and the malted rye is the most distinctive expression of that philosophy in the range.
Malting rounds rye spice into something softer and sweeter: baked bread, honey, gentle cinnamon and a touch of dried fruit, with a light body and a clean, warm finish. It is genuinely approachable neat, which is not true of every rye. Over ice it opens further, and it makes a notably smooth Manhattan for anyone who finds standard ryes too aggressive.
