Beck's traces back to Bremen in 1873 and to the German purity law, which allows water, malt, hops and yeast and nothing else. That constraint has kept the recipe recognizable for a century and a half, and the green bottle remains one of the most widely distributed pilsners on earth. A six pack of it is a safe bet in almost any company.
The beer is pale gold and dry, with a firm hop bitterness, a clean malt backbone and a crisp finish that resets the palate rather than lingering. Serve it cold in a tall glass. It is a natural with sausage, pretzels, fried food, pizza and grilled meat, and it works as well before dinner as with it.
