Bodegas Ego works out of Jumilla in southeastern Spain, where old Monastrell vines dig deep for water and hand back concentrated, sun-soaked fruit. Goru Gold is the label reserved for their more ambitious bottlings, and it drinks like a wine given room and time rather than rushed to market. For anyone who has worked through the Rioja shelf and wants a new direction, this is it.
Dense and darkly fruited, with black plum, licorice and warm baking spice laid over a firm, faintly rustic backbone. It wants food and a little air. Serve just below room temperature with roast meat, paella, or a board of Spanish charcuterie.
