Mendocino County sits north of Sonoma, cooler and considerably less crowded, and it has quietly become one of the more interesting corners of California for Pinot Noir. Bonterra farms there organically, which for a grape as thin-skinned and vulnerable as Pinot is a genuine discipline rather than a slogan. The wine that results is lighter-framed and more transparent than most California reds at this price.
Red cherry, cranberry and rose petal, with a savory earthy undercurrent and bright, food-friendly acidity. Serve it cool. Salmon, roast pork, duck breast and mushroom dishes all match well, and it will never overwhelm a delicate plate.
