Four Botran brothers began distilling in Guatemala in 1939, and the family still runs the operation from the volcanic highlands around Quetzaltenango. This twelve year expression is built from virgin sugarcane honey rather than molasses, then matured in a solera system that continuously marries younger and older barrels into a single blend. Altitude does the rest, slowing evaporation and rounding the spirit out.
Expect toffee, dried banana and toasted oak with a soft, dry finish that never turns syrupy. Neat in a rocks glass is the honest way to meet it, though it holds its shape in an old fashioned. A smart step up for anyone who assumed they only liked whiskey.
