Volcanic soil in the hills of Lake County gives these vineyards their character, and Eruption is the Brassfield estate red blend that leans hardest into it. The 2019 is made to show what northern California manages outside the famous valleys. Warm days and genuinely cold nights at elevation ripen the fruit fully while keeping acidity intact, which is the trick this style depends on.
The result is generous and dark fruited, with blackberry, plum, a lick of mocha and sweet spice from barrel, over tannins smooth enough to drink tonight. Open it for burgers off the grill, a pepper crusted steak, or a Tuesday in need of improvement. Serve a touch below room temperature.
