Amber in the glass and unmistakably dry on the palate, this Reserva sits a clear step above the everyday Brugal bottlings without climbing into collector territory. It matures in American oak in the Dominican Republic, where tropical heat compresses the process considerably. A year in the Caribbean does roughly the work of several in Scotland.
Toffee, dried apricot, vanilla and light oak spice run through a medium body and finish dry rather than sweet. This is a sipping rum first, taken neat or over one large cube with an orange twist, though it improves an old fashioned considerably. A good gift for anyone who assumes rum is only for mixing.
