On the western shore of Islay, Bruichladdich reopened in 2001 after a long silence and has spent the years since arguing that barley provenance matters as much in whisky as it does in wine. Everything is bottled on site, without chill filtration or added colour, and the distillery remains one of the island's most vocal independents.
The core Bruichladdich style is unpeated, which is a genuine surprise on an island famous for smoke, showing barley sweetness, orchard fruit, sea spray and a chalky mineral note.
