James Buchanan built his blend in the 1880s for London drinkers who wanted Scotch to be smooth rather than smoky, and the twelve year old is still the clearest statement of that idea. The smaller format puts a properly aged blend within reach without committing to a full bottle.
Soft and rounded, with dried fruit, honey, a little almond and only a whisper of smoke underneath. It takes a rock or a splash of water gracefully and holds its shape in a highball. A good introduction for someone stepping up from blends that carry no age statement at all.
