Armenia holds one of the oldest continuous winemaking cultures on earth, with excavated presses in the Areni caves dating back more than six thousand years. Bottles from the region are still relatively scarce on American shelves, which makes any Armenian selection worth attention from drinkers who have already worked through the usual European and Californian shortlists.

Armenian wines tend toward warmth and ripe fruit, shaped by high-altitude vineyards and long sunny growing seasons, with enough acidity to keep everything in balance. Serve at cellar temperature and give it a few minutes of air before the first real pour. A rewarding bottle alongside grilled lamb, roasted vegetables, or a table of small plates.
