Rutherford sits in the middle of the Napa Valley floor, and the Cabernet grown there carries a dusty, structured signature that growers have talked about for generations. Cakebread Cellars has farmed this stretch of the valley since 1973, and its Cabernet Sauvignon remains the wine the family is best known for. A benchmark Napa red without the trophy bottle price.
Expect blackcurrant, dark chocolate and cedar over tannins that are firm but polished. Decant an hour before serving and pour at cool room temperature alongside a ribeye, short ribs or anything that has spent time over charcoal. It will also reward another five years in a cool closet.
