Jack and Dolores Cakebread founded their Rutherford winery in 1973 and spent the next half century turning a modest Napa property into one of the most recognized names in the valley. Their Merlot has always been the quieter sibling to the Cabernet, and with the 2015 vintage now well into its window, this is a bottle that has already done its waiting for you.
Merlot at this level trades power for plushness: dark plum, cocoa and soft, rounded tannins that make it easy to open on a weeknight. Decant briefly, serve at cool room temperature, and pour it with lamb, mushroom risotto or a well aged cheddar.
