M. Chapoutier is one of the reference houses of the Rhone, a family firm known for serious single-vineyard bottlings and for printing braille on every label it produces. La Ciboise is the approachable end of that portfolio: southern French red made to be drunk rather than filed away in a cellar.
Grenache-led in character, with dark cherry, raspberry, dried herbs and a peppery lift, medium-bodied and supple in tannin. Open it an hour ahead or simply pour it slightly cool. It suits lamb, grilled sausage, ratatouille and hard cheese, and it is an unusually well-made weeknight bottle.
