Charanda is Mexico's own rum, protected by a denomination of origin centered on Uruapan in the highlands of Michoacan, where volcanic soil and sugarcane have coexisted since the colonial era. Very few bottles from that tradition reach Chicago shelves, which makes this an unusually interesting way to fill the rum slot in a home bar.
Clear and lively in the glass, it leads with green cane, wet stone and a faint grassy funk that sets it apart from molasses-based rums. Use it where you want brightness: a daiquiri, a mojito, a tall highball with soda and lime. Sturdy enough to mix by the pitcher and distinctive enough to notice.
