Chivas Brothers has been blending in Scotland since the nineteenth century, and the 12 Year Old is the house style in its most recognizable form. Every whisky in the blend has spent at least twelve years in cask, which is what earns this bottle its reputation for smoothness in a category where age statements are increasingly scarce.
The profile is soft and honeyed, ripe apple and vanilla over a nutty malt backbone, closing gently and warm. Forgiving enough to drink neat with a drop of water, sturdy enough for a highball with soda, and an unfussy foundation for a Rob Roy.
