Created in 1953 to mark the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II and named for the twenty-one gun salute fired on royal occasions, Royal Salute has spent seven decades at the summit of the Chivas Brothers range. Every whisky in the blend has rested at least twenty-one years before marrying, and the porcelain flagon it ships in is now as recognisable as what it holds.
The whisky is rich and unhurried: dried fruit, orange peel, dark honey, a thread of woodsmoke and sandalwood, all resolving into a long, velvety finish. Drink it neat in a copita, or with the smallest splash of water. Keep it for the evenings that deserve some ceremony, and give it the time it asks for.
