Cloudy Bay is the wine that put New Zealand on the world map in the nineteen eighties, and Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc has been measured against it ever since. Four decades on it remains the benchmark, made with more restraint and more texture than the wave of imitators it inspired.
The 2021 is pungent and precise: passionfruit, grapefruit, fresh-cut grass and a saline mineral line that keeps it taut through a long finish. Serve it thoroughly chilled in a decent-sized glass. Oysters, goat cheese, ceviche and green asparagus all work, and so does drinking it alone.
