The filmmaker who bought a California wine estate in the 1970s ended up building one of the state's more recognizable labels, and the whites are where the everyday value sits. This Pinot Grigio is made in the crisp, dry California idiom rather than the featherweight Italian one, which gives it a little more flesh and a little more fruit to work with.
Green apple, pear and citrus, dry and clean, with a bright acidic line and a short, refreshing finish. Serve it properly cold. It is very good with shellfish, salads, light pasta or a cheese plate, and it works just as well on a porch with nothing at all. An easy, dependable white.
