Product Description
Aglianico grown on the volcanic slopes of Monte Vulture, in Basilicata, produces one of the most serious and least famous reds in Italy. D Angelo has been working these vineyards for generations, and the wine carries the structure and mineral grip that only volcanic soil and a late-ripening grape can give. It is southern Italy answer to the great northern reds, at a fraction of the attention and the price.
Expect black cherry, dried herbs, leather and a smoky, ashy mineral edge behind firm tannins. Decant it, serve it at cellar temperature, and put it with lamb, braised beef, aged pecorino or a mushroom ragu. A wine for patient drinkers and for anyone who thinks they have run out of Italian reds to discover.
