Few bottles are as instantly recognizable as the squared-off Disaronno decanter, and the recipe inside traces back to Saronno, in northern Italy. The smaller format is the right buy for a household that reaches for amaretto occasionally rather than nightly.
Marzipan and toasted almond dominate, followed by apricot kernel, vanilla and burnt sugar, with a silky texture and a long sweet finish. Curiously, it contains no almonds at all. Pour it over ice with an orange slice, stir it into coffee, or shake it with lemon for the definitive Amaretto Sour.
