Gold rum occupies a useful middle ground: enough barrel character to matter in a cocktail, light enough not to take the whole drink over. Don Q builds this one from rums matured in American oak at the Serralles distillery in Ponce, then blends for consistency rather than drama.
Amber-tinged, with butterscotch, vanilla and a mild toasted note over clean cane sweetness. It gives a rum and cola something to say for itself, holds its own in a mai tai, and is perfectly pleasant over ice with a lime wedge. A solid, unfussy bottle for regular use.
