VSOP means the brandy in the blend has spent longer in oak than the VS, and with E and J that extra time shows up as a rounder, sweeter pour. The Gallo family has been distilling brandy in California since 1968, and this is the step up most drinkers make once the entry bottle has become routine.
Caramel, vanilla and baked apple lead, with a hint of toasted oak and a smooth, warming finish. It drinks well neat at room temperature or over a single cube. It also improves a brandy old fashioned considerably. The large format keeps the cost per pour sensible for regular use.
