California has quietly become one of the world's larger brandy producers, and the XO is where the E&J house shows what its oldest stock can do. Extra-aged and blended for depth rather than sweetness, it sits at the top of a very familiar range, and the step up in texture from the V.S.O.P. is easy to taste.
Deeper and drier than its siblings, with toffee, roasted nut, dried fig and a long warm finish carrying more wood spice. Drink it neat in a small snifter, gently warmed by the hand, or over one large cube. Well suited to an after-dinner pour when you want something considered but not precious.
