El Tesoro still crushes its cooked agave with a tahona, a volcanic stone wheel, and ferments with the fibers left in the tank. It is a slow, labor-heavy method that most distilleries abandoned decades ago. The payoff is a tequila with unusual texture and depth, and the anejo is where that house style is easiest to appreciate.
Years in American oak bring caramel, dried fruit, cocoa and toasted spice around a core of sweet cooked agave, finishing long and beautifully composed. Drink it neat in a copita, without ice, and give it a minute in the glass. One of the more rewarding aged tequilas at anything near this price.
