Elmer T. Lee walked into the Frankfort distillery in 1949 and eventually created the first modern single-barrel bourbon, a decision that changed how the whole industry thought about its inventory. The bottle that carries his name is still drawn one barrel at a time from the rye-forward mash he favored, and it is among the harder bourbons in Kentucky to find on a shelf.
Soft and elegant rather than loud, with honey, orange peel, toasted nut and a light spice that fades gently. It is best neat or with a single cube, where its balance is easiest to appreciate. A bourbon that rewards attention without demanding it.
