Ferreira has been shipping Port from the Douro since 1751, and its legend still runs through Dona Antonia Ferreira, the widow who expanded the house across the nineteenth century. Vintage Port is bottled only in years the house believes deserve the name.
Expect a dense, sweet wine of blackberry, cassis and violet, with fortified warmth and firm tannins built for decades in a cellar. Decant it carefully off the sediment an hour before serving, pour in small glasses, and bring out dark chocolate, walnuts or Stilton.
