Dolcetto is the wine Piedmontese families open on a Tuesday, and Franco Serra treats it with the care that habit deserves. Grown in the Alba hills alongside the region's more famous Nebbiolo, Dolcetto ripens earlier and carries less tannin, which is why it became the everyday red of the Langhe rather than the special occasion bottle. It is honest, unoaked and built for drinking rather than waiting.
The colour is deep purple, the fruit runs to blackberry and dark plum, and a faint almond bitterness on the finish keeps things from turning sweet. Serve it slightly cool with salumi, pizza, or anything involving tomato and garlic. Uncomplicated in the best sense.
