Freemark Abbey has been making Cabernet in Napa Valley since the 1880s, and it was one of the California wineries poured at the 1976 Paris tasting that changed how the world regarded the region. That history shows in the house style, which favours balance and restraint over sheer power. The 2018 vintage gave Napa a long, even growing season, and the wine reflects it.
Cassis and dark cherry sit over cedar, graphite and fine grained tannin, with a long, composed finish. Give it an hour in a decanter. It is built for ribeye, rack of lamb or a quiet evening with an aged cheddar, and it will keep developing in the cellar for years yet.
