Merlot done properly is one of Napa's quieter pleasures, and Freemark Abbey stayed committed to it through the years when fashion looked elsewhere. The 2018 season gave the valley a long, temperate ripening period, which suits a grape that turns clumsy when it is pushed too hard. The result is polished rather than plush, with real structure underneath the fruit.
Black plum, cocoa and a hint of dried herb, with velvet tannins and a supple finish that stays fresh. Open it half an hour ahead. Pair it with duck, mushroom dishes, roast pork, or a burger you have taken some trouble over, and drink it over the next several years.
