G.H. Mumm was founded in Reims in 1827 and has spent nearly two centuries near the top of the Champagne hierarchy, with the red sash on the label taken from the ribbon of the Legion of Honour. The house draws on an extensive network of vineyards across the region, which is what allows a non vintage blend to taste the same reassuring way year after year.
Fine, persistent bubbles carry white peach, citrus and a warm brioche note from lees ageing, finishing dry and precise. Serve it cold but not frozen, in a tulip glass rather than a narrow flute. It belongs with oysters, fried chicken, a celebration, or a Tuesday that deserves better than it got.
