Anderson Valley is one of the few corners of California cool enough to make Pinot Noir taste like Pinot Noir. Fog rolls in off the Mendocino coast and lingers, stretching the growing season and preserving acidity, and Goldeneye has built its reputation on working that narrow valley and little else. A serious bottle from a serious address.
Black cherry and raspberry with forest floor, baking spice and a savory undertow, medium-bodied with silky tannins and a long, elegant finish. Give it half an hour open and serve it a touch below room temperature. Salmon, duck, mushroom risotto or roast pork all suit it. For an occasion that deserves more than an everyday red.
