Very Special is what the VS on the label actually stands for, and this is the entry point to the Hennessy range — the blend that introduced most of the world to Cognac. Eaux-de-vie matured in French oak are assembled to a fixed house profile, which is why a pour today tastes like a pour from a decade ago. Dependable is not a backhanded compliment when it is this difficult to achieve.
Toasted oak and ripe grape carry it, with vanilla, faint butterscotch and a peppery close. Mix it freely: ginger ale and lime, a Cognac sour, or over one large cube with an orange twist.
