Anejo is where tequila stops competing with vodka and starts competing with whiskey. Hornitos gives this over a year in American oak, long enough for the barrel to contribute properly, and the result is the range’s most contemplative bottle. It is still 100 percent blue agave, which at this price is the headline.
The palate turns amber-sweet: butterscotch, vanilla, toasted oak and dried apricot laid over baked agave, finishing warm and lightly spiced. Best neat in a copita, or over one large cube after dinner. If you like bourbon and have been suspicious of tequila, test the theory here.
