Product Description
Ilegal began as a smuggling operation — the founder carried bottles of Oaxacan mezcal across the border for his bar in Guatemala, and the brand name is a nod to that history. The mezcal is made the traditional way from espadin agave: roasted in earthen pits, crushed, fermented, and twice distilled in small copper stills.
The signature is smoke, but the good kind — woodsmoke, roasted agave, green pepper, citrus peel and a mineral, faintly saline finish. Sip it neat at room temperature with an orange slice alongside. It also makes a genuinely excellent mezcal negroni or a smoky paloma.
