Cabernet Franc rarely gets a bottle of its own at this price, which is reason enough to take a look. It is the parent grape of Cabernet Sauvignon, leaner and more aromatic than its famous offspring, and Ironstone gives it a friendly California treatment rather than a severe one. The result is a red that feels distinctive without asking much of the drinker.
Raspberry and red plum come first, then the variety's signature notes of bell pepper, crushed violet and pencil shavings, closing on light, chalky tannin. Serve it cool and it sharpens up considerably. Try it with roast pork, herbed chicken, a mushroom tart, or anything involving tomatoes and basil.
