Arroyo Seco, in Monterey County, is one of the coolest growing sites in California, funneling Pacific air up a river valley over the stony ground that gives this wine its name. J. Lohr has farmed there for decades, and Riverstone is the payoff: a Chardonnay carrying genuine cool-climate acidity underneath its richness, which is a harder trick than it sounds.
Pear, white peach and a squeeze of lime, with honeysuckle, toasted hazelnut and a creamy thread from time on the lees. The finish stays bright rather than heavy. Serve chilled but not frigid, alongside roast chicken, crab, scallops in butter, or a creamy pasta.
