Smoothness is the point. Three passes through copper pot stills strip out the rough edges, and marrying rich pot still whiskey with lighter grain whiskey gives Jameson its easy, rounded character. Aged in seasoned oak casks, it is the standard-issue Irish whiskey behind bars from Dublin to Chicago, and the 750 ml is the size most households actually reach for.
Soft vanilla, pear and a hint of sherried nuttiness, finishing clean rather than hot. Forgiving neat, excellent over a single large cube, and the backbone of an Irish coffee that tastes the way it should. If you keep one Irish whiskey in the house, this is usually the one.
