A brewery down the road from the old Midleton distillery borrowed Jameson casks for its stout, and Jameson asked for them back. Filled again with Irish whiskey, those stout-seasoned barrels left something behind, and the Caskmates Stout Edition is the happy accident that followed. It is one of the few genuinely original ideas in mainstream whiskey, and it costs barely more than the standard bottling.
Cocoa, coffee grounds and butterscotch arrive first, then the familiar Jameson orchard fruit, closing on a dry, roasty note. Drink it neat with a stout beside it, or in an Old Fashioned where the chocolate notes really show. A natural gift for a craft beer drinker.
