Joseph Magnus sold whiskey in the Midwest until Prohibition closed the business. More than a century later his great-grandson revived the name in Washington, D.C., and built this bourbon on the founder's original habit of taking good straight whiskey and refining it further in fortified wine casks. Triple cask finishing does the heavy lifting here.
Sherry and cognac barrels lend dried cherry, marzipan and orange oil to a base of caramel, baking spice and char. At one hundred proof it carries real presence without turning harsh, and it takes a single large cube gracefully. Try it neat first, then add a few drops of water and watch it open.
