Vintner's Reserve is the line that put Kendall-Jackson into every restaurant and grocery aisle in the country, and the Cabernet is its most-poured red. Grapes come off cooler coastal California vineyards rather than hot valley floors, which lends the wine more freshness and less jam than this price bracket usually manages.
Blackcurrant and black cherry over cedar, mocha and a dusting of sweet spice, with tannins firm enough to notice and smooth enough to drink young. Pour it with grilled steak, lamb, roast beef, mushrooms or aged cheese. Twenty minutes of air rounds it out nicely, if you can wait that long.
