Cool coastal fog is the whole story with Pinot Noir in California, and Kendall-Jackson has spent four decades accumulating the vineyards that get it. The Vintner's Reserve bottling draws on that fruit to make a Pinot that stays bright and red-fruited rather than reaching for weight the grape does not need.
Cherry, raspberry and a little pomegranate over baking spice, a whisper of oak, and silky light tannins on a clean finish. Serve it slightly chilled in a wide glass. Salmon, duck, roast chicken, mushroom dishes, ham and the softer cheeses all work well. A versatile red for a table that is not eating steak.
