Kahlua has been made in Veracruz since 1936, built on Mexican arabica coffee, rum and sugar, and it remains the reference point for the whole coffee liqueur category. The half-bottle is the right size for a home bar that reaches for it in cocktails rather than by the glass, and it keeps well after opening.
Dark and syrupy, with roasted coffee, brown sugar, vanilla and a faint bitter edge that keeps the sweetness in check. It is the essential ingredient in an espresso martini, a White Russian or a Black Russian, and it is very good poured over ice cream or stirred into coffee on a cold Chicago night.
