Ukraine takes vodka, or horilka, about as seriously as Scotland takes whisky, and the Khortytsia distillery is among the country's largest producers. Khor is its export line, made from local grain and filtered to a high degree of clarity, and it sells for a fraction of what comparable Western labels ask. That gap is the main argument for trying it.
The profile is much what the name implies: cold, clean and smooth, with a soft grain sweetness, a faint mineral note and a short finish. Keep the bottle in the freezer and pour it into small chilled glasses the traditional way, or use it as the neutral backbone of a martini, mule or bloody mary.
