Booker Noe built Knob Creek in the 1990s as a rebuke to thin, timid bourbon, and the recipe has not lost its nerve: aged nine years, bottled at 100 proof, and named for the creek that ran past Abraham Lincoln's boyhood home. It remains one of the best arguments that serious bourbon does not have to be scarce or expensive.
The nose is vanilla, toasted nuts and charred oak; the palate delivers caramel, dark fruit and a firm rye-spice kick that stands up to ice and to stirring. Excellent in an Old Fashioned or a Manhattan, and just as good neat for anyone who likes a bourbon with shoulders.
