Laphroaig is the most polarizing distillery in Scotland, and it wears that reputation with some pride. The ten-year-old is the standard bearer: peat cut from the distillery's own bog on Islay, malted in house, and matured in ex-bourbon barrels. People either take to it immediately or never do.
The nose is medicinal and maritime, all iodine, seaweed and tar; the palate turns sweeter with vanilla and smoked malt before a long, ashy finish.
