Piedmont grows Nebbiolo on a handful of steep, fog-prone hillsides, and Barolo is what happens when that grape is given time. Le Clivie works in that tradition without the collector-market markup, turning out a 2015 with real structure and nearly a decade of bottle age already behind it. For anyone curious about why Barolo is called the king of Italian reds, this is an unintimidating way in.
Expect dried rose and tar over sour cherry, with fine tannins that tighten across the finish and a savory, almost balsamic edge. Decant it for an hour. It wants food with fat and salt: braised short ribs, mushroom risotto, aged Parmigiano.
