Cantine Lombardo works in Marsala itself, the Sicilian port whose name became a wine style, and the sweet bottling is the one most people picture. Grapes ripen hard under Sicilian sun, spirit is added to halt fermentation, and the wine keeps its natural sugar. Fortified wines like this were built to travel, and they reward an opened bottle kept on the counter for weeks.
Rich and amber-toned, with raisin, honey, burnt sugar and roasted hazelnut over a long finish. A small glass closes a meal beautifully, especially beside biscotti, blue cheese or a wedge of dark chocolate tart.
