Luxardo has been working with Marasca cherries in northeast Italy since 1821, and these are the jarred result: dark, dense, candied fruit suspended in its own thick syrup. They are the reason a good Manhattan looks and tastes finished, and the reason bartenders quietly refuse to go back to the neon supermarket kind.

The flavor runs deep and almost winey — brown sugar, almond, a faint bitter edge from the Marasca character. Drop one into a Manhattan, an old fashioned or a whiskey sour, or spoon fruit and syrup over vanilla ice cream, cheesecake, or a cheese board. One jar keeps a long time in the refrigerator.
